Sin Miedo, for Rodolfo (18x24″)

Rodolfo Sanchez cut hair at Pageboy and was a pillar of our Downtown San Jose community until we lost him to cancer at 28. I drew this for him, and his friends handed me the details that matter most: Stella, his Boston terrier, riding shotgun in the red El Camino, and the line he lived by, “Even when I’m down, I’m up.”

The first run was a small edition of two-color screen prints, gifted to his family and the friends closest to him. This is the same drawing as a framed fine art print, red and black on cream.

The composition builds on an illustration by the immensely talented John-Patrick Thomas, and the lettering pairs Old English with “Chomsky,” a custom sans serif by my brother Ivan. “Sin miedo” means without fear, and it became his motto and his community’s.
